How to Use Protect PDF
- Upload your PDF
Click to browse or drag and drop your PDF. Everything happens in your browser β your file is never uploaded to any server.
- Set your password and permissions
Enter an Open Password to restrict who can view the document. Optionally set an Owner Password to control permissions like printing, copying, and editing. Choose 128-bit encryption for maximum security.
- Download your protected PDF
Click 'Protect & Download'. The encrypted PDF is generated in your browser and saved to your device immediately.
Why Password-Protect Your PDF?
PDF encryption is essential for protecting sensitive documents such as financial reports, legal contracts, medical records, personal identification documents, and confidential business proposals. A password-protected PDF ensures that only authorized recipients can access your content.
How PDF Password Protection Works
Our tool implements the PDF Standard Security Handler as defined in the PDF specification. When you set a password, the document content is encrypted usingRC4 stream cipher with a derived key. The encryption key is generated through a secure key derivation process involving MD5 hashing, ensuring the password cannot be reverse-engineered from the file alone.
The 128-bit RC4 option (PDF 1.4) uses a 16-byte encryption key with 50 MD5 iteration rounds for key strengthening, while the 40-bit RC4option (PDF 1.1) uses a 5-byte key for legacy compatibility.
Understanding PDF Permissions
Beyond blocking unauthorized access, PDF encryption lets you define granular permissions for people who know the password:
- Printing: Control whether recipients can print the document.
- Copying: Prevent extraction of text, images, or other content.
- Editing: Lock the document structure against modification.
- Annotations: Allow or disallow adding comments and sticky notes.
These permissions are encoded in the PDF's encryption dictionary and enforced by compliant PDF viewers. The owner password is required to override any of these settings.
Completely Private & Secure Processing
Unlike many online PDF tools that upload your documents to remote servers,PocketTools processes everything locally in your browser. Your PDF bytes are read directly from your device's memory, encrypted using pure client-side cryptography, and the resulting file is written back to your device β all without a single byte leaving your computer.
Compatibility
Protected PDFs generated by this tool are compatible with all major PDF viewers, including Adobe Acrobat Reader, Apple Preview,Foxit PDF Reader, Google Chrome's built-in viewer,Mozilla Firefox, and any other standard-compliant PDF application. The 128-bit RC4 standard has been part of the PDF specification since version 1.4 (released in 2001) and enjoys universal support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my PDF safe when I use this tool?
Absolutely. This tool performs all encryption directly inside your web browser using JavaScript. Your PDF file is never uploaded to any server. It stays entirely on your device, making this one of the most private PDF protection tools available online.
What is the difference between the Open Password and the Owner Password?
The Open Password (also called the User Password) is required to open and view the PDF β anyone without it will be blocked from accessing the content. The Owner Password controls document permissions such as printing, copying, and editing. If you set an Owner Password, recipients need it to change those permissions. If you only set an Open Password, that same password governs both access and permissions.
Which encryption level should I choose β 40-bit or 128-bit?
We strongly recommend 128-bit RC4 (PDF 1.4 standard) for any sensitive document. It provides significantly stronger protection and is supported by all modern PDF viewers including Adobe Acrobat, Apple Preview, and web browsers. Choose 40-bit only if you need to share with very old legacy software that cannot handle 128-bit encryption.
Can I remove the password from a protected PDF later?
Yes β if you know the password, you can use our companion "Unlock PDF" tool to remove the protection. However, if you forget your password, it cannot be recovered since we never store any passwords or encryption keys. Always keep a secure backup of your password.
